What is Veterinary Cold Laser Therapy?

Cold laser therapy is a cutting-edge therapeutic treatment that is becoming increasingly popular in the world of veterinary medicine. It is particularly effective in helping companion animals to recover from illness and injury.

Our veterinarians are passionate about providing the best possible treatment for your pet. Veterinary cold laser therapy provides a safe and non-invasive way to do this by alleviating pain, encouraging your pet's healing and reducing their inflammation to speed their return to their normal selves.

There is a wide variety of conditions that can be improved with the use of pet laser therapy. These include muscle and joint pain, muscles spasms and arthritis symptoms.

The Cold Laser Therapy Treatment Process

Treatment for pets using cold laser therapy involves the movement of a handheld laser wand over the part of your pet's body that is suffering from a condition or has sustained an injury.

Your pet will feel a comforting and pleasant warm feeling in the area receiving treatment, likely finding it quite relaxing. Cold laser therapy sessions at our veterinary hospital will generally last about 20 minutes.

Your pet may feel improvements to their condition—usually reduced pain—after their very first treatment. Sometimes, it may take a bit longer for the effects of the treatment to be noticeable but this doesn't mean nothing is happening.

Uses for Pet Laser Therapy

Veterinary cold laser therapy has a wide range of medical uses and is especially effective when combined with other traditional veterinary treatment methods or procedures.

Laser therapy promotes circulation and encourages cell regeneration, benefiting the following procedures and conditions:

  • Strains & Sprains
  • Wounds
  • Bone Fractures
  • Inflammation
  • Dental Procedures
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Lick Granuloma
  • Degenerative Joint Disease
  • Post-Surgical Recovery

Cold laser therapy treatments are cumulative. This means that each successive treatment builds on the last. Your vet will be able to provide an estimate of how many therapy sessions your pet will require to gain the full benefit for their condition from this treatment.

Benefits of Cold Laser Therapy

Therapeutic laser treatment provides various health benefits to pets that undergo it. When your pet companion receives low-intensity laser therapy treatment, the special wavelengths of light the wand emits promote an alteration of the physiology of their cells. This process is call photobiomodulation.

The strength of the laser, and the wavelength of the light it emits, will change the layer of tissue that is affected by the treatment. The stronger the laser, the deeper the tissues it affects will be.

Some of the benefits of cold laser therapy include:

  • Increases blood perfusion
  • Encourages bone healing
  • Increases wound healing
  • Reduces edema (swelling)
  • Enhances neovascularization
  • Reduces inflammation and associated pain
  • Accelerates mitochondrial cell metabolism
